Short biography of my portrait sitter, Derek Williams:

Derek Williams was born in New Zealand in 1946. Worked in radio and television in New Zealand before moving to Asia.

Williams has been based in Thailand and Hongkong for CBS News. Williams was cameraman during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan and was the sole witness to the event and had world exclusive coverage.

Williams was the “60 Minutes” cameraman for several highly acclaimed stories including “The de-Mining of Kuwait", “Land Mines-the Deadly Killers” in Cambodia with Mike Wallace, “Vietnam Veterans Initiative” in Vietnam, “Child Prostitution” with Ed Bradley, “Mail Order Brides” with Leslie Stahl, and “Hong Kong-The Last Governor” with Steve Kroft.

Other notable CBS News assignments have included the fall of Saigon in 1975, the Bangladesh war, the Siege if Beirut in 1982, the assassination of Indian prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the first Intafada in Israel, the Armenian earthquake in the former Soviet Union, the People Power revolution in the Philippines, and the War in the Gulf in 1990/1991.

Won the George Polk award for coverage of the events leading up to, and the crackdown in Tien An Mien square, Beijing. Also covered the Hong Kong hand-over to China for BBC News in June 1997.

In April/May 2000, Williams spent nearly one month aboard the Rainbow Warrior in the Seto Sea of Japan on assignment for Greenpeace International documenting their campaign for a “Toxic Free Asia".

Williams was the field producer & cameraman for the CBS “60 Minutes” - “Memories of a Massacre” (The Bob Kerrey Story), winner of the 2001 Peabody Award.

In a two-camera shoot with David Lom of AsiaWorks Singapore they won an Emmy Award in 2006 for the “60 Minutes” story “The Moken Sea-Gypsies” with correspondent Bob Simon.

Williams was the cameraman on Dan Rather’s last international story for 60 Minutes, “The Hermit Kingdom”, a rare look inside North Korea.
